Los Angeles Clippers' head coach Ty Lue is brimming with confidence as the team gears up for the upcoming season. The pivotal player in question, star forward Kawhi Leonard, battled knee issues that curtailed his participation in the latter part of last season and key playoff matchups. According to Lue, Leonard will be fit and ready for the Clippers' training camp, which kicks off on October 1 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
"I speak to him all the time. He'll be ready for [Clippers] training camp. He's feeling good and I know he'll be ready for training camp," expressed a hopeful Ty Lue. This news comes as a relief for both the team and its fans, who witnessed Leonard being out of action during crucial periods last season.
Leonard's Injury Struggles
Leonard's recurring knee problems have been a significant concern over the past season. The issues not only sidelined him for the final eight regular-season games due to inflammation but also kept him out of crucial playoff contests against the Dallas Mavericks. His absence was felt deeply, as the Clippers struggled to maintain their momentum without their star forward.
Leonard’s road to recovery saw him participating in a minicamp with Team USA in Las Vegas ahead of the Tokyo Olympics in July. Despite his involvement, Leonard was eventually replaced by Boston Celtics guard Derrick White, a decision that left Clippers' president Lawrence Frank visibly disappointed.
"It was USAB's call, and I was, quite frankly, very disappointed with the decision. Kawhi wanted to play. We wanted him to play. I was there the first two practices. He looked very good. Participated, was a full participant in everything that they did," Frank stated.
Frank further added, "I expressed to them, I really wish that they would have given Kawhi more time. We have the benefit of having been around Kawhi for five years to see his body and see where he's at. So, he looked good to me." This underscores the internal belief within the Clippers organization that Leonard was ready for high-level competition, even if external decisions suggested otherwise.
Team Dynamics Amidst Changes
The Clippers face another hurdle as they reconvene for their training camp. Paul George, a key player, has bid farewell to the Clippers and signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency. This significant departure could have ripple effects on the team's performance, but Lue remains undeterred.
"When you lose a guy of Paul George's stature, instantly people [think] oh, they can't win or they're not going to be competitive. But that just challenges me even more. OK, people are counting us out or people don't think we're going to be good. That right there just gives me an extra dose of [motivation]," Lue asserted with typical resolve.
The Clippers’ training camp in Honolulu is more than just a preparation for the season; it's an opportunity to rebuild and recalibrate in the face of recent setbacks. Lue's optimism, coupled with the return of a healthy Leonard, sets an inspiring tone as the team heads into the new season.
Looking Forward to New Beginnings
Excitement is also mounting for the Clippers as they prepare to inaugurate their new arena on October 23. The grand opening will feature a matchup against the Phoenix Suns, offering a fresh chapter for the Clippers and their ardent supporters. This game at the new venue is expected to be more than just a contest; it’s a statement of the team’s resilience and forward momentum.
With Leonard expected to be back at full strength and the desire to prove skeptics wrong post-George's departure, the Clippers are positioning themselves for a noteworthy season. Training camp in Honolulu will be the first step in building the foundations for what they hope will be a successful campaign.
The Clippers' faithful can look forward to seeing their team, led by a healthy Leonard, taking to the court with renewed vigor and determination.
