Chad Kelly Returns to Toronto Argonauts After Suspension
In a significant development for the Toronto Argonauts, quarterback Chad Kelly made his return to the team on Sunday. The Canadian Football League (CFL) reinstated Kelly following a suspension that stemmed from a serious violation of the league's gender-based violence policy. Kelly was initially suspended on May 7, which sidelined him for two exhibition games and the first nine regular-season contests.
The suspension followed an independent investigation into allegations made by a former strength-and-conditioning coach, who accused Kelly of sexual harassment. This lawsuit also included claims of wrongful dismissal against the Argonauts. The legal dispute was settled in June through mediation. Compliance with the suspension mandates required Kelly to undergo confidential assessments by an independent expert and attend counseling sessions guided by a specialist in gender-based violence.
The CFL's final decision to reinstate Kelly was taken after reviewing his confidential psychological assessment, conducted with the assistance of experts. This crucial step was followed by a conversation between Kelly and CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie, leading to the quarterback’s return to practice.
Kelly participated in Sunday’s practice session, handling approximately 70% of the starting snaps, a promising sign for the team. "It was good to have him back. His teammates were excited to see him back in the building," said Head Coach Ryan Dinwiddie. The coach also noted that Kelly’s workload would be gradually increased in the forthcoming practices, expressing cautious optimism about his readiness for the next game.
Toronto, currently standing at 5-4, is set to meet Saskatchewan (5-4-1) on Thursday night. Despite the anticipation surrounding Kelly's return, Dinwiddie is careful not to rush the quarterback into a starting role given his extended absence from training camp. Kelly may share duties with Cameron Dukes and veteran quarterback Nick Arbuckle.
This marks Kelly’s return to action since Toronto's loss to Montreal in the East Division final last year. During his suspension, he kept his distance from the team and refrained from engaging with the media. Reflecting on his situation, Kelly commented, "I am sorry for my actions and the impact it has had on many people personally, the Toronto Argonauts, and the CFL. I recognize that this is just one step in the process of bettering myself, but it is an important one, and I am committed to doing what is needed to be a better teammate, colleague, and person."
Kelly's return is significant not just for him personally but also for the Argonauts as they aim to reclaim their standing in the CFL. Last season, Kelly led the team to a league-best and franchise-record 16-2 record. However, their journey ended abruptly with a 38-17 defeat to Montreal, who went on to become the Grey Cup champions.
Argonauts General Manager Mike Clemons emphasized the importance of Kelly’s accountability and commitment to improving himself and the team. "This is an important step for Chad, who has taken full accountability for his actions and represents just the beginning of his ongoing commitment to bettering himself and learning from this experience. There continues to be much work to do to strengthen our team culture, and we are all committed with Chad's return, to work on this together, as a team," Clemons stated.
Chad Kelly’s football journey has seen its fair share of highs and lows. From stints at Clemson, East Mississippi Community College, and Mississippi during his college years, to being the last pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, Kelly’s path has been tumultuous. The Broncos released him in 2018 following an arrest for criminal trespassing, adding another chapter to his eventful career.
As Kelly reintegrates into the Argonauts' roster, all eyes will be on his performance and how it impacts the team’s prospects for the season. Toronto's cautious approach, coupled with Kelly’s stated commitment to personal growth, offers a narrative of redemption and resilience. With crucial games ahead, the coming weeks will be telling for Kelly, the Argonauts, and their fans.
