Detroit Lions Optimistic as Jahmyr Gibbs Nears Return
The Detroit Lions are set to receive a significant boost with the imminent return of running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. Head coach Dan Campbell expressed optimism regarding Gibbs' progress and potential availability for the Lions' Week 1 encounter against the Los Angeles Rams.
"Our plan is to get him going next week," Campbell stated, indicating a positive outlook on Gibbs' recovery timeline. Gibbs sustained the hamstring injury during a practice session earlier this month, putting his readiness for the season opener into question. Despite the setback, Campbell has been encouraged by the running back's healing process, noting Gibbs is "trending the right way" in terms of his recovery.
As the Lions prepare for their final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team is also gearing up for a robust preparation week leading into the Rams game. "Wish we had more practice with him, but as far as the health of it, he's healing and he's on schedule to be back, and get his legs back under him. And we'll see where he's at," Campbell said, highlighting the balance between rushing Gibbs back and ensuring he is physically ready for the season ahead.
Gibbs is coming off a notable debut season where he amassed 945 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 182 carries. His performance placed him second on the team in rushing yards, touchdowns, and carries. Additionally, Gibbs demonstrated versatility by recording 52 receptions for 316 yards and a touchdown. During the playoffs, he was equally impactful, contributing 144 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries, along with 94 yards and another touchdown on 14 receptions.
The Lions recognize Gibbs as an integral component of their offensive strategy, which adds to the urgency of his return. Campbell is hopeful that several other key players will also return to action soon after the final preseason game. "We're hoping the day after [this Saturday's preseason finale against the Steelers], I think we're going to get a lot of guys back," he revealed, expressing cautious optimism about the team’s injury situation.
The list of players on the mend includes tight end Sam LaPorta, offensive tackle Dan Skipper, guard Kevin Zeitler, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, and defensive lineman DJ Reader. Their return, along with Gibbs', would significantly bolster the team's roster depth as they brace for the regular season. "So, we're about to get a whole group of guys back, hopefully Sunday," Campbell noted, underscoring the importance of the upcoming week for the Lions.
Looking ahead, the Lions are focused on making the most of their preparation time. "And then they'll get next week's practice before we get ready for the Rams and then we do Rams practice. So, Gibbs falls into that boat," Campbell elaborated, indicating that practice sessions in the coming days will be crucial for assessing player readiness.
As the anticipation builds for the Lions' season opener, the health and performance of returning players like Gibbs could play a pivotal role in setting the tone for their campaign. With a solid preparation plan and the hopeful return of key players, the Lions are gearing up to face the Rams with renewed vigor and determination.
