CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers have cemented their future in Charlotte through a significant decision by the Charlotte City Council. On Monday night, the council approved an $800 million stadium renovation plan, ensuring the NFL team remains in the city for at least the next 20 years.
The city has pledged to contribute $650 million to the renovation efforts for Bank of America Stadium, while Panthers owner David Tepper will cover the remaining $150 million upfront. Tepper, who has already invested more than $117 million in stadium upgrades, has also agreed to potentially cover an estimated $421 million in overages for capital improvements.
The city's investment will be funded by existing hospitality and tourism tax resources. The vote, which passed by a margin of 7-3, highlights both the support and skepticism among council members regarding the project.
Commitment to Keeping the Panthers in Charlotte
Despite the Panthers' struggles since Tepper purchased the team in 2018—with a record of 31-68 and six head coaches in just a few years—the council was determined not to risk losing the team.
