The Anaheim Ducks have announced a significant shift in how fans can tune into their local game broadcasts, opting for a dual-focused approach that combines direct-to-consumer streaming with traditional local broadcasts. This strategic move aims to enhance accessibility for fans throughout the Ducks’ TV market, marking a new era in sports broadcasting for the team.
Expanding Accessibility
The Anaheim Ducks are set to broadcast 65 of their games next season on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles, a move intended to make the games more accessible to a wider audience. All games will also be streamed regionally on the Victory+ streaming service completely free of charge. This dual strategy ensures that fans will have multiple ways to engage with the team’s games without any financial barriers.
“We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air) will see locally broadcast games free of charge,” said Ducks president Aaron Teats. His statement underscores the organization's commitment to breaking down accessibility barriers for fans eager to watch their favorite team in action.
The Victory+ streaming platform will operate as a free, ad-supported service, making it an attractive option for fans who prefer digital consumption of sports content. The app is set to be downloadable on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones starting in September, further broadening the ways in which fans can connect with the Ducks.
Past and Future Broadcasting Partnerships
This new broadcasting arrangement comes on the heels of the Ducks' contract with their former broadcaster, Diamond Sports Group, expiring at the end of the 2023-24 season. The change also coincides with Diamond Sports Group’s current entanglement in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas. Despite these challenges, Diamond Sports Group will continue to carry games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season and maintains agreements with other major sports franchises such as the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).
In a further testament to the forward-thinking nature of this new broadcasting deal, the Ducks have partnered with A Parent Media, a company that brings a wealth of broadcasting experience to the table. “The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background,” noted Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media.
Inclusivity and Engagement
Covering a regional territory that includes Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii, the Ducks are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring their fans are engaged and included. The over-the-air broadcasts will be available on Channel 13, adding a layer of traditional accessibility that complements the modern streaming options available through Victory+.
The vision behind these moves is clear: to enhance fan engagement and accessibility. “It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms,” reiterated Aaron Teats.
Broadcast Team and Beyond
The Ducks’ loyal fans will be pleased to hear that beloved broadcasters Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will remain as part of the team, ensuring continuity and familiarity for viewers. Their continued presence will help bridge the gap between the old and new modes of broadcast, providing a comforting sense of consistency amidst these exciting changes.
Interestingly, the Ducks are not alone in their innovative approach. The Florida Panthers, for instance, are moving their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Dallas Stars plan to stream their games regionally on Victory+ as well. These shifts highlight a broader trend in professional sports broadcasting, one that embraces technological advancements and evolving viewer preferences.
In tapping into both traditional and digital platforms, the Ducks are poised to set a precedent in the NHL for how regional sports can be more inclusively and effectively broadcasted. By removing cost barriers and providing multiple accessible platforms, they are putting fans at the forefront of their strategic initiatives, ensuring that everyone in their vast regional territory can enjoy the thrill of Ducks hockey.
